The last event of this years´ IDM Superbike in Hockenheim......
+ Test NEW HP4.
The season with team “Wilbers-BMW-Racing“ with Jörg Teuchert, Lucy Glöckner, Gareth Jones and Irek Sokora did not turn out exactly as planned but in a whole we are satisfied with the season 2012!
The season did end a bit sad because Jörg one week before Hockenheim decided to end his very successful career…. Understandable at 42 years, children going to school and a company where his dad just entered retirement…. Thank you Jörg!!
Then Irek Sikora, as one of the biggest BMW partners in Poland broke the news that he was to end riding in the IDM series due to work commitments. A pity, because he just reached a top 10 position. Thank you Irek!!
Since the start of 2010, the team with BMW now reached the top 3 in IDM Superbike and we have to thank all of our riders, especially Jörg Teuchert who was able to win the very first race of this season. Unfortunately some mishaps occurred by which we at least lost two secure wins and important points that were missing in the end to have a real chance on the title…………..
Right now we are planning the team for 2013 and this will consist of 3 riders. We are currently talking to respective riders for 2013 and will decide carefully so that all our partners and of course BMW will be happy with our pick! Firstly is our surprisingly strong Powerlady, Lucy Glöckner who in her very first year in the IDM regularly was among the 10 best riders and put the heat on the competition! There is surely more potential slumbering within her!
On Monday after Hockenheim another test took place but this time it was something very special…….
The brand new BMW HP4 in full racing edition was standing in the box in front of Burkhard Stember and the team for a first test with Superbiker Ghisbert van Ginhoven who is known as an expert electronics engineer. However everything turned out differently but with a good ending!
During the qualifying on Saturday Ghisbert van Ginhoven fell so hard that he was not ready for the test on Monday!
As plan B that was considered during the extreme preparation we changed to Gareth Jones for the test. With great success, Gareth showed such a good performance that the BMW factory engineers were able to work with the results!
The completely new and semi-active HP4 suspension had never before been tested under racing conditions and therefore everybody involved was quite nervous how the new technology was going to be working. After the first test everybody tried to read Gareths´ mind…. Then the redemption…........"Not bad, not bad" were his first words!
Suspension development expert Ralf Schwickerath, as well as the intellectual father of this Superbike project, Gerhard (Gegesch) Lindner were satisfied by the performance and especially by the lap times!
We started a comparison to this seasons motorcycle to see where the basis was and to prepare for the real test program on Monday when the uncountable suspension tuning options and changes in software will be checked!
Like always, one day was much too short to get to know and understand all the options…. It was nonetheless astonishing how well the new technology worked!
After the test we had a short discussion with the BMW technicians who were very satisfied with the result after only one day of testing. We were able to make the first “corner by corner” tests and were able to already gain one second!
The team is thinking about engaging, next to development rider Ghisbert van Ginhoven, the whole HP4 team. This is currently in discussion in Munich but for our team we’d like to accept the challenge…. It is the future!!
On Monday evening we had a talk with Gareth Jones who was able to finish the season on a good fourth position. Although he, as well as the team had expected a bit more, we talked about a continuation. As yet there has not been a final decision!
Right now the team is on the Slowakia-ring for testing the new tire material with our partner Dunlop for the season 2013. There won’t be a big winter break this time!
