Despite tough conditions, podium position in the 1st race in Oschersleben.
Friday during free training the sun was shining in the Börde but unfortunately only on Friday! We were satisfied with Friday’s ´ result and well prepared for Saturdays’ qualifying!
Sadly the exhausting setup work from Friday did not eventuate to much because instead of sun on Saturday it was raining cats and dogs – thus back to square one!
Until then we did not have any test on a wet surface this year and therefore it came as a surprise that all riders of team “Wilbers-BMW-Racing” passed qualifying among the first positions.
The track dried quickly and by the end of the first Qualifying session the weather became merciful and Gareth and Jörg remained up front while Irek and Lucy fell a bit behind !
The second qualifying during rain was the icing of the cake for our team. 2nd position for Jörg, 3rd for Gareth and 4th for Lucy. Sadly Irek was left behind on position 18… the biggest sensation without question was our Lucy who maneuvers the BMW with female sensitiveness! The results of the second qualifying were very impressive indeed, however the results from the first qualifying where the track was dryer and faster lap times would be the starting lineup for the first race!
The weather on Sunday for the first race was noticeably cooler but dry and after a good starting position and close racing, Jörg finished 3rd and on podium!! Team mate Gareth Jones lost his fight for the third position to Jörg with only 00.033 seconds deficit – a photo-finish!
Lucy, after a good start tried to make her way to the front and on lap 15 she overtook Luca Hansen on his Yamaha. However he seemed to have a problem with being overtaken by a female colleague and was trying to get past her in a hari-kari-like fashion! This went horribly wrong and both went down - luckily mostly unscathed. First zero-points for Lucy! Irek finished a satisfying 14th position and was happy to at least be in the points .
Jörg had promised fireworks for his fourth race but in the end and after a sensational race he had to cope with 4th position!
After a very good start, Gareth and Jörg both were pushing really hard and putting up a great fight with each other but this allowed Ewan Nigon from France, also riding BMW, to escape ahead!
After this our boys took the fight to Karl Muggeridge who desperately wanted a place on the podium. From behind Matej Smrz, who was disappointed by a bad start appeared under full speed!
The last curve was the crucial factor!
Jörg was aware of both Muggeridge and team-mate Jones however all of the sudden there was Smrz among them bringing everybody out of concept and appearing out of nowhere to finish 2nd position followed by Muggas and Gareth in a good 4th position, Jörg was 5th… Great performance of Matej Smrz!!!
Our power lady Lucy finished the second race with points on the 14th position and Irek was disappointed to miss the points by reaching position 16.
Jörg remains championship leader with two points ahead!
It was a great weekend for team “Wilbers-BMW-Racing” and for BMW of course. We’re looking forward to the next race in the Eifel on Nürburgring June 15 to 17th. Before this we’ll be testing some new innovations and adjustments from June 8th till June 10th in Schleiz!
Like always the TV channel “Sport 1” will be airing an hour of the race on Saturday May 12th at 12:15!
Maybe we see each other on the Nürburgring!
