You\u2019ve found the right candidate. They\u2019ve interviewed well, they\u2019re a great fit for the team and you make the offer.<\/p>\n
Then they say no.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s frustrating, but before assuming it was all about salary, there are often a few other factors at play.<\/p>\n
Salary matters, but candidates are also considering flexibility, culture, career progression, location, job security and the people they\u2019ll be working with.<\/p>\n
Sometimes they\u2019re not saying no to the job. They\u2019re saying no to the overall package.<\/p>\n
Good candidates are often considering more than one opportunity.<\/p>\n
A slow process, long gaps between communication or unclear next steps can quickly see a candidate lose interest or accept another offer.<\/p>\n
You don\u2019t need to rush the process, but you do need to keep candidates informed and engaged.<\/p>\n
A candidate resigns and suddenly their current employer offers them more money, a promotion or promises that things will change.<\/p>\n
It can be tempting to stay.<\/p>\n
But if the reason they started looking was career progression, flexibility, culture or simply wanting a change, a pay rise may not fix the underlying issue.<\/p>\n
This is worth discussing with candidates before they reach the resignation stage.<\/p>\n
Before making an offer, find out what really matters to your candidate.<\/p>\n
Ask:<\/p>\n
What are you looking for in your next role?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
What would make this the right move for you?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n
Is there anything that could stop you accepting an offer?<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
These conversations can tell you far more than a CV alone.<\/p>\n
And if they still say no? Ask why, take the feedback on board and keep the relationship.<\/p>\n
Because in recruitment, today\u2019s \u201cno\u201d doesn\u2019t necessarily mean \u201cnever\u201d.<\/p>\n
