Recruitment With Integrity: Why Honest Conversations Matter More Than Speed

Recruitment With Integrity: Why Honest Conversations Matter More Than Speed

After more than a decade working in recruitment and agencies, I’ve learned that the biggest differentiator in this industry isn’t speed, price, or even network.

It’s honesty.

When I first started, like many recruiters, I believed responsiveness and fast turnarounds were the ultimate markers of value. Clients wanted CVs quickly. Candidates wanted updates immediately. And agencies competed hard on fees and timelines.

But over time, I saw the downside of that race.

Our industry can sometimes damage its own reputation by trying to be the cheapest or the fastest. The biggest promises win the brief. The shortest timelines win the deal. But when speed and cost are prioritised above process and experience, quality is often the casualty. If you can’t afford to invest the time required based on the agreed fee, what service are you really offering?

Now, I approach every interaction – whether with a client or a candidate – with what can sometimes feel like brutal honesty first.

If the brief isn’t realistic, I’ll say so.
If the salary doesn’t match the expectations, we address it early.
If the timeline doesn’t reflect the depth of search required, that conversation happens upfront.

Not to be difficult – but to set clear expectations at the beginning and avoid challenges or surprises halfway through, or worse, at the end.

There can be no true partnership built on false promises or unrealistic deadlines. When expectations aren’t aligned early, friction is inevitable later.

Because at the end of the day, recruitment is about people.

It’s about someone’s career move. It’s about a leadership team’s future. It’s about culture, trust, ambition and growth. When processes are rushed or mismanaged in the pursuit of speed, candidate experience suffers. Communication drops. Feedback becomes vague. And reputations – both agency and employer – really take a hit.

The cheapest process is rarely the most cost-effective.
The fastest shortlist is rarely the strongest.

What consistently delivers quality outcomes is transparency, accountability and a shared understanding of what “good” really looks like.

After more than a decade, I’ve come to believe that the most valuable thing a recruiter can offer isn’t speed.

It’s clarity.

And that’s where genuine, long-term partnerships begin.
