Ethics Is What You Do When No One’s Watching
Ethics Is What You Do When No One’s Watching
Most businesses have a values statement somewhere. On the website, in the induction pack, maybe framed in reception. Integrity, respect, accountability. It reads well, but it isn’t where ethics actually lives.
Ethics lives in the small moments nobody else sees. The timesheet rounded up by half an hour. The mistake quietly pinned on someone who wasn’t in the room. The client told an order is “on its way” when it hasn’t left the warehouse. The promise made to close a deal, knowing it won’t be kept. None of these make the news. All of them say something about the person making the call.
Your Title Doesn’t Change the Test
Ethics often gets treated as a leadership issue, something for executives and boards to worry about. It isn’t. A graduate, a supervisor, a sales rep, a general manager, a supplier and a client all face the same choices. Seniority doesn’t make someone more ethical. It just makes the fallout bigger when they get it wrong.
It’s Never Just About You
Every decision lands on someone. Cut a corner and a colleague inherits the problem. Take credit for someone else’s work and you’ve taught your team that effort goes unrewarded. Mislead a client and the whole business wears the damage, including people who had nothing to do with it.
Culture is built the same way, one decision at a time. People pay far more attention to what gets tolerated than to what gets written in a policy. If poor behaviour is ignored because the person is senior or brings in revenue, everyone learns what the real rules are.
People Remember the Bad
You can do the right thing for years and lose that goodwill in one moment. A broken promise, a dodgy invoice, a candidate left hanging, a supplier paid late again with no explanation. People rarely talk about the hundred times things went smoothly. They always talk about the time they didn’t.
Reputations travel, particularly in smaller markets where industries overlap and people move between businesses. The person you treat poorly today might be your client, your manager or your referee next year. Being the person others get warned about is a hard reputation to shake.
What It Looks Like in Practice
None of this needs a policy rewrite. It comes down to a few habits:
- Do what you said you’d do, or speak up early when you can’t.
- Own your mistakes before someone else finds them.
- Be honest when it’s inconvenient, not just when it’s easy.
- Give credit where it’s due.
- Treat people well when there’s nothing in it for you.
The Bottom Line
Ethics isn’t a department, a document or a job title. It’s the sum of the choices people make when no one is checking. Strong businesses are built by people who make the right call even when the wrong one would be easier, and that’s what clients, staff and partners remember long after the work itself is forgotten.
