No Australian Experience? Here’s How Construction & Engineering Candidates Actually Get Hired

No Australian Experience? Here’s How Construction & Engineering Candidates Actually Get Hired

Every week I meet and speak with highly capable construction and engineering professionals who’ve just arrived in Australia on skilled visas.

They present with excellent resumes and solid overseas experience and skills.

And yet… they describe their struggles to make traction and even land an interview.

As a recruiter, I’ll be upfront: most of my clients engage me to find them candidates with local experience.  Engineering and construction in Australia is risk-averse, heavily regulated, and relationship-driven.

That doesn’t mean you won’t find your dream job. It just means you need to be strategic and open to a range of positions.

Here’s what actually works:

  1. Networking: In Australian construction and engineering, jobs are won through relationships, often before a role is even advertised.

That means:

  • Attending local industry events, including University career expos
  • Requesting a catch up over coffee
  • Asking for introductions and following up with the people you meet

Your goal isn’t to ask “are you hiring?” Your goal is to be remembered when someone does hire.

  1. Be open to a variety of job roles and positions: Don’t hold back because the role is below your experience and skill level. Think of your first Australian role as a bridge, not a destination. Once you have local experience on your resume, doors open very quickly and this will give you options for your future career.
  2. Target companies that hire directly, not just recruiters: Recruiters are engaged by clients and are restricted to following a job brief, which most often includes local experience. Look to apply directly to businesses advertising roles and connect with the team directly.

Australia is facing a skill shortage across engineering and construction, so don’t lose hope! Follow the above steps and focus on building relationships and being flexible on the jobs you will consider, and you will secure your first Australia role.

Recruitment Networking: Why “Always Recruiting” is the Secret to Staying Ahead

Recruitment Networking: Why “Always Recruiting” is the Secret to Staying Ahead When meeting clients who have a job vacancy, one of the first questions we ask is: “When do you need this person?” The most common answer? “Yesterday.” That’s because recruitment is often reactive. An employee resigns or a new project is won, and suddenly…
